Steven “JayBoy” Ross, Jr. was born August 2, 1931, in Huntsville, Tx. He was the last of nine children born to the parents of the late Steven Ross Sr., and Lillie (Sanders). In 1953, he proudly enlisted in the United States Army. During his time of service, he was stationed at Camp Chaffee Arkansas as he participated as a “Heavy Vehicle Driver”, reaching the rank of Private 1st Class, then Corporal. Later, in “Jayboy’s” life he moved to Houston, Tx in 1955 and was a dedicated worker for First City National Bank as a parking garage attendant for seven years. Prior to the early 1950’s he was blessed to have two amazing daughters (Brenda Bowden from Huntsville, Tx and Stephanie Perkins from Aurora, Colorado).
In 1962, he started working for Carnation Milk Company where he then met the love of his life, Ollie Mae West (Ross) from Navasota, Tx. On December 14,1963, they married and had five children, three boys and two girls. Steven and Ollie Ross were married for sixty-two years. He then retired from Carnation Milk Company in 1985. After retiring from Carnation Milk Company, in 1992 he utilized his time as a HISD school crossing guard for twelve years before officially giving up the working environment.
Steven” Jayboy” Ross, Jr. was a true cowboy to his name, he loves wearing his western attire any chance he gets. He also loves watching western movies, his favorite cartoons “Tom&Jerry”, hunting, and spending time with family. If he couldn’t bring the city to the country, he would surely bring the country to the city. He was a ‘true’ country man at heart, he knew how to build anything he puts his mind to, especially dog houses and horse stalls. He was known for his love of raising hunting dogs, capturing wild racoons, possums, riding horses, and raising a Brenham bull in his backyard by the name of “SweetDaddy”.
Steven “Jayboy” Ross, Jr, was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He leaves behind cherish memories to his loving wife, Ollie Ross; (sons) Terry Ross, Jerry Ross, and Barry Ross; (daughters) Brenda Bowden, Stephanie Perkins, Lynnet Holiday (Ross), and Loretta Harris (Ross), two (son -in-laws) Kevin Holiday Sr., and Gary Harris Sr, fifteen grandchildren, twenty-six great grandchildren, and fourteen great -great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
He adored his family and grandchildren to heart. He touched them with famous laughter, words of wisdom and most of all “Love”. “Jayboy” had a way with words, if you say something he agreed upon you can best believe he would say,
(in Steven “Jayboy’s voice) “I wanna thank ya”.
That saying will NEVER be forgotten.
